NOTE: Some of the information listed in the charts below may seem to
contradict each other. The reason why is because each Fuel jet chart/Horsepower
chart is printed for a specific kit which may or may not be your own. Always
consult your instruction manual or contact tech support for Fuel/Nitrous jets
for your specific application. NOS tech support number is (714)-546-0592, NX
tech support number is (940)767-7694. TNT tech support number is (903)839.5498. Zex tech support number is 1-800-872-7223. A
long distance phone call for correct
jets for your application is cheaper than new rings or valve job or worse.

Nitrous Pressure as a relationship to Bottle temperature
QUESTION: What kind of gains should I expect from a nitrous kit?
QUESTION: Dave Hartman submitted dyno results of his 98 SOHC.
His numbers with a 50hp shot of nitrous is 188.4HP with 197.9 ft/lbs. Power with
out nitrous was 139.9HP and 135.8 ft/lbs. That's a gain of 48.5 WHP and 62.1 ft/lbs. Daves mods
are as follows:
Little bit of weight reduction, 2455 race weight with me in it.
Iceman
55mmTB
MPx UDP
Mopar PCM
Blackdog Header
Dynomax Cat Back
Deyeme flex side mounts
Mopar front mount w/ Prothane insert
Booger Strut
Magnum Cam
Magnum Valve Springs
Mopar oversized valves
Valve Job
Bowl blend
Head milled .020
EGR block off
Unorthodox cam gear (set straight up, not dialed in on dyno)
QUESTION: I have a Mopar or AFX computer? Can I use nitrous.
ANSWER: The performance computers sold by Mopar Performance and AFX
advance the timing to increase performance. Advanced timing and nitrous doesn't
always mix well. This doesn't mean that you can't use nitrous with these computers
it just means that your "safety window" is decreased. A Crane or MSD ignition
is highly recommended to retard timing when using the Mopar or AFX performance
computers.
QUESTION: What fuel pressure should I set my fuel pressure safety
switch at?
ANSWER: First the fuel pressure safety switch is a device that goes
between your fuel rail and fuel solenoid. If the fuel pressure drops too much,
then it cuts the nitrous off. Here is what Chris Barnett says regarding a
DOHC Neon with a stock fuel system " Easy. If you are using the stock
fuel system on a first gen, 45 or so. Stock fuel pressure is 49. There are
2 reasons the pressure would fall, one, the pump is going out or filter is
clogged, and 2, your fuel pump can't supply enough fuel. The injectors stay
open for longer at high rpm and the pressure drops as a result. I'd go somewhere
between 40-45 psi for the fuel pressure safety switch."
QUESTION: How much does a Nitrous kit cost?
ANSWER: Depends on a lot of variables but expect about $1000-1200 for all the bells and
whistles. Here's a general breakdown of prices:
Nitrous kit- about $450-600 New. Depends on the brand of the kit and where you get it.
It is possible to find group buys or other specials to find a kit for less if you look hard enough.
NX Gen X kit - $250-300. Contains Bottle warmer & thermostat, N2O pressure guage, Fuel
Pressure Safety switch, and a N2O blowdown tube (REQUIRED AT ALL NHRA/SCCA SANCTIONED
EVENTS)
Window switch - $50 at Harlan Engineering
QUESTION: What spark plugs should I use?
ANSWER: Stock plugs are fine but it is recommended that you use a
"colder" plug. What plug would that be? For a 95-99 Neon the NGK BKR7E is 2 ranges colder,
NGK BKR6E
is 1 range colder than stock. (Thanks to "Eric - '98 R/T Coupe"
) I found them at the local Advance Auto Parts(The only place in my hick town that had them). It is not
recommended to run Splitfire, or Platinum style plugs.
QUESTION: What's is the Neon Fuel Pressure?
ANSWER: 49psi...no go plug it in to the calculators and have some
fun.
QUESTION: What jets to I use for a 50/75/100/5000 shot?
ANSWER: Use all those charts and calculators listed above that I
spent an afternoon writing instead of looking for a job.
QUESTION: HELP!!! My car shot flames out of the intake and now runs
like shit!
ANSWER: Check the plugs for color, Check you intake/exhaust manifold
gaskets, check your (SOHC)plastic manifold for cracks, check your throttle
body gasket, check your compression, check your intake/Exhaust manifold gaskets,
check you SOHC plastic manifold for cracks, do a leak down test. Fix the problem
depending on which one of these is true.
QUESTION: What is the biggest shot you can run on a stock bottom
end?
ANSWER: Most will agree that a 50hp shot is the higest recomended
for a novice nitrous user. 75hp has been used with very few well chosen mods
with experienced nitrous users with success. A few have ran 100hp with proper
precise tuning, although a novice should not attempt. a 100hp shot.
QUESTION: What are "must haves" for my new nitrous kit?
ANSWER: Fuel Pressure Safety Switch(to turn off your nitrous if your
fuel pressure drops to below safe levels), Bottle Warmer(to keep N2O at optimal
pressure), N2O pressure guage(to keep an eye on the pressure... one mounted
on the bottle is fine), Blowdown tube (REQUIRED AT ALL NHRA/SCCA SANCTIONED
EVENTS). NX sells a kit that contains all of the above that's sold as the
GenX-1 kit. An RPM Window switch is also a great safety device that allows
you to set the RPM at which your nitrous is turned on and off. Harlan Enginerring(listed
below) sells a that works well for $50 which does not require the use of "pills"
but uses small switches and buttons to set RPM. NOS and MSD sell a version
that uses "pills" that are interchangable quickly. A purge kit realeases
the air in your N2O lines.
QUESTION: Which is better kit for my Neon? Wet or Dry?
ANSWER: This is up to you, and this will be debated forever. One
side says one kit has a potential to puddle fuel in the intake manifold and
explode. The other side says the stock Neon fuel injectors are not large enough
to supply enough fuel. Who is correct? Both sides make very good arguments...
but it's your car. (If you don't know which kit is which...go back and read
the first section entitled "LINKS"). Both have been used successfully, and
more likely than not both have probably had an "issue" at one time or another.
Do the research and decide for yourself.
QUESTION: Which kit is the best? NOS, NX, Venom, blah blah?
ANSWER: Remember the "Infamous Pulley Wars"? Same thing, only worse,
so don't ask. Do the research and decide which one fits your long term plans
the best and go for that one.
QUESTION: How hard is a Nitrous kit to install? How much does it
cost to get it installed?
ANSWER: Not to sound snotty but, there is a saying, If you can't
install it....then you have no business using it. It's true. If you don't
install it, then you won't know where to start when(Not IF, but WHEN) something
goes wrong. A nitrous kit can be installed on a Neon with basic hand tools
in well under a day with plenty of beer and pizza breaks.
QUESTION: Screw a single nozzle...I want to go direct port! What do I need?
ANSWER: Unless you plan on using OVER a 100hp shot exclusively, AND this
will be a race only car AND have a built bottom end...it's not recomended.
The tuning involved in a direct port is intense and not for the faint of heard
or thin of wallet. Sprayn2 is having success with a dual nozzle TnT setup,
although it's not a good idea for in-experienced nitrous users. If you would
like more information on that send me an email.
I am unable to answer specific nitrous questions, give nitrous related advice, or well
anything else an engineer should answer, so please refrain from asking. If however you have a good
